Edit
**Most important metric: Mental_Health_Index. Most important category: Primary_Platform.**
I chose these from the dataset's purpose, not from a statistical ranking. The dataset is about how social media affects student wellbeing, and the decisions it serves include which platforms to flag as higher-risk for stress and mental health. Mental_Health_Index is the closest thing to a headline outcome. Primary_Platform is the category that maps most directly to an action, because it is what a school can actually flag, discuss or advise on.
**How the metric varies by platform** (average Mental_Health_Index, from the query on `raw.Social_media_impact_on_life` grouped by Primary_Platform, 7 platforms, all 4,500 students):
- **Highest:** X (Twitter) at 80.81 (206 students), followed by YouTube at 80.16 (818) and Instagram at 80.01 (1,453).
- **Middle:** TikTok at 79.85 (1,226 students).
- **Lowest:** LinkedIn at 79.39 (96), Reddit at 79.28 (229) and Snapchat at 78.99 (472).
**Supporting pattern.** The ordering lines up loosely with usage and stress.
- Snapchat has the lowest mental-health score and the most daily hours, at 5.46 against 5.14 for X.
- X has the highest score, the fewest daily hours and the lowest stress, at 12.46 against 14.06 for LinkedIn and 13.97 for Snapchat.
- Sleep follows the same direction. X averages 6.81 hours, against 6.64 for Reddit and 6.67 for Snapchat.
- GPA is almost flat across all platforms, at 3.42–3.43.
**Caveats.**
- The spread is small: about 1.8 index points between the best and worst platform. Platform is a weak differentiator of mental health in this data.
- The comparison is observational. It shows association, not that a platform causes the difference, and students may choose platforms based on traits that also affect wellbeing.
- LinkedIn (96 students) and X (206) are small groups, so their averages are less reliable. The tail position of LinkedIn in particular should not be over-read.
- I did not test significance or control for age, gender or academic level.
Snapchat, and to a lesser extent Reddit and TikTok, would be reasonable places to start a wellbeing conversation. The evidence does not support strong platform-specific claims.
